the veil house

The Veil House is a comprehensive remodel of an existing residence in Beaver Creek, Colorado, reimagined by 159 Design in collaboration with Studio James to create a more refined and contemporary connection between architecture, interiors, and the surrounding mountain landscape.  

The concept of the veil became a recurring theme throughout the transformation. Layers of wood, glass, architectural screens, and filtered natural light create moments that alternately reveal and obscure, providing intimacy while maintaining a strong visual connection between spaces and the landscape beyond. Expansive glazing draws the surrounding forest and mountain views into the home, allowing the architecture to become a subtle frame between interior and exterior. 

At the heart of the residence, a dramatic multi-story stair and skylight bring natural light deep into the interior. Vertical wood screening filters views through the stair and creates changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day, reinforcing the idea of the veil while providing a sculptural backdrop for the home's art collection. 

A restrained palette of natural stone, light wood, glass, and dark metal brings warmth and continuity to the remodeled spaces, complemented by custom millwork and carefully integrated lighting. Monumental stone elements anchor the interiors while the lighter architectural layers create contrast and transparency. 

A dedicated wine room was designed around the clients' wine collection, featuring custom wine storage and a specialized wine cabinet imported from Europe. Conceived as both functional storage and a display for the collection, the room transforms a highly personal element of the clients' lifestyle into an intimate architectural experience. 

The result is a contemporary mountain residence defined by layers—light and shadow, transparency and privacy, architecture and landscape—creating a home that feels simultaneously intimate and open to its Beaver Creek setting.
